THE VIEW OF IS NICER THAN THE VIEW FROM
Imagine you live on the nicest house on the block. What do you see through your living room window? Houses that aren’t as nice as yours, of course.
This is an important lesson for shooting.
Sure, it’s tempting to put the camera in the most spectacular spot you can find. But most of the time, the spectacular spot doesn’t have a spectacular view. It is the spectacular view.
What do you see from the mountain? The valley. Put the camera in the valley, though, and you see the mountain.
Mountains fill screens better than valleys.
Nice houses look nicer through the window than houses that aren’t as nice.
It amazes me how many directors don’t understand this.
Brian Belefant is a director who gets this. Why not give him a call at (503) 715 2852 or send an email to belefant (at) me (dot) com?
